1 # How to Deal with a Suspicious “Root” on Your Porch.

Young 911 operator with headset, focused on answering dumb non-emergency calls in a busy communication center.

An elderly woman from South Carolina’s Lowcountry called me, worried that someone might have put a “root” on her property, similar to a voodoo practice. She had noticed a white powder, like flour, on her porch and didn’t know what to do. I asked if she had a straw broom. When she said yes, I told her to grab it along with a dustpan, walk backward toward the powder, sweep it into the dustpan, then carry it to the left side of her porch and toss it over her left shoulder. After dusting off the broom on the porch railing, the ritual was complete. She followed the steps and felt much better.
